In April of 2010, Michie Concrete Products teamed with E. D. Swett, Inc. of Concord, NH to supply precast bridge deck units to be used in the reconstruction of NHDOT Bridge No. 163/106, carrying Interstate 93 (F. E. Everett Turnpike) over Loudon Road (NH Route 9) at exit 14 in Concord, NH. With timing an important element, as the heavily travelled southbound lanes of Interstate 93 would have to be closed, a new pre-assembly construction technique was employed at Michie Concrete Products Henniker, NH fabrication plant prior to actually shipping the individual units to the job site. All precast deck units were fully assembled – from the pouring of the concrete to the pre-drilling of attachment holes through the metal “I” beams under controlled conditions. Therefore, once on site, the deck units went together smoothly like a finely engineered jig saw puzzle. Once traffic was diverted off the bridge a complete superstructure replacement was constructed. The precast deck units were then easily assembled by the contractor in a strong, quickly assembled bridge surface requiring a shutdown of traffic for only 56 hours from start to finish. This bridge will provide both New Hampshire residents and visiting tourists with trouble-free travel for years to come.
